Seems that only one post on FB fro ~ My Life in a Yurt ~ has produced more views by noon than happened all last month.  Writing about what I know ~ my life makes the most sense.  This past year has been one of survival more than one where I could pause even to write ~ this is going to change in 2014!!!

NoteBook 1 : Title 1

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2012

Now that it is in the 2012/2013 school year & I have  retired from substitute teaching, life has truly changed.  For the positive, no longer am I getting up @ 5:30am (usually with too little sleep).  Driving in the dark to a school where the students are also still 1/2 asleep. Nor am I having to dress like some prep. The kinda vague teachers instructions are also not missed.
Yet, there is the mental exchange with the students.  Be they young or in high school ~ the youth had a spark of being that I truly miss.  Even with the reluctance to recognize that they were about to learn something.  I often told students, especially as they would leave my class ~ try to learn 'something' today, even if it is not from a teacher.  Then there were the experiences as the 6th grader who said to me ~ you are Mr. James, I had you in the 2nd grade & you taught me how to do Algebra & I got it. ~  (Did love teaching early grades that all 4 math functions all fit together & just because they were in 1st or 2nd grade did not mean they should not be taught how all fit together.)
For 10 years, I moved among the students of Athens City, Athens County, & Vinton County school.  Teaching in every grade & in every school in those 3 school systems.  Walking in the halls & having students ask with anticipation as to who I was subing for, let me know they where hopful I would be their sub.  With this exposure I found that almost everywhere I went, there would be a student that I had taught.  There are the incidents as the student who sees me out of school while he is with his mom & turning to her & saying that he would like to have hair like mine.  Ya see, I have 2 very long dreadlocks, which kinda made me stand out from the other teachers.  Treating the students as PEOPLE instead of some underling also made me stand out among their other adult experiences in the school.

6/23/24/25/11

Thursday, Friday & Saturday ~ were days of restocking food, laundry, & rest. Also, sure takes some time to catch up on this blog ~ since life has been going at such a fast pace.
Sara told me of her thyroid problems ~ wish I could have gotten to her much earlier ~ seems life style, age & menopause changes have alot to do with thyroid problems in females. Rose, had this problem !! Tried to give Nalnee a heads up ~ will have to keep trying.
Heard from Oso that Corbin & she are selling the house in Bellingham & moving to Leavenworth, which is the center for rock climbing in Washington. Should be good for them to get a house large enough for Fin & Isla. Leavenworth is also a cool town ~ all sorts of outdoor activities in the area.

6/22/11

Well one would have to say that this day really started in the night. As I have said ~ after the dinner on the 21st ~ I curled up in my tent from the rain. Yet, as I awaken in the night to the desire to pee ~ the tent is all closed in around me. What had been room to at least sit up, had become a squashed little toad stool. Though I had placed a good rain-fly over my tent ~ I had created a pocket for water to collect & weight down my tent during the night. So with flashlight in hand & mouth ~ I 'crawl out of the tent & dump the water from the rain-fly. The tent still not regaining all of it's previous shape ~ but enough for now in the wee hours of this day.
As I awoke ~ no rain!!!! ~ packing up & out would not be so so hard. I got my gear together, as did John & Ivars. They hiked there gear on out & then went back in to the kitchen. When I get to the car ~ should I or shouldn't I trek back to the kitchen to see if breakfast is ready. Thankfully, a young couple came out with their gear & told me the kitchen was just getting started with breakfast. Shortly Ivars & John came down the trail to the car & we were off.
We took a different road back ~ beautiful country ~ coal has been raping the land & mountains in this part to Va. for years. Made it home in about 7 hours with 2 stops ~ not bad for going to a gathering.!!!
